History

Chronology of the Institute of Social Science Library

August 24, 1946 Institute of Social Science established as attachment to Tokyo Imperial University
November 30, 1946 Institute of Social Science Office established in Faculty of Economics Office on first floor of Faculty of Law, Letters and Economics Bldg. 1
March 1947 Classroom 19 in Faculty of Law, Letters and Economics Bldg. 1 converted into assistants’ room (small part) and archive (large part), with library office installed in waiting room
From April 1947 Books/magazines started to be received and organized
April 1954 Construction of new ISS building completed (located on north side of old building, one basement floor and four overground floors). Office, teaching staff offices, and conference rooms moved to new building
December 1957 Construction of new building completed (located on south side of old building, one basement floor and four overground floors). Library, assistants’ room, and archive moved to new building
Around 1959 Books section (according to first edition of the Institute of Social Science Handbook)
From December 1959 Microfilm/fiche materials started to be received and organized
Around 1960 Books and materials sections (two sections) in library (according to second edition of the Institute of Social Science Handbook)
Around 1963 Books, materials, and magazines/newspapers sections (three sections) in library (according to third edition of the Institute of Social Science Handbook)
June 1967 Xerox machine (420 model) installed for first time
March 1969 Construction of new building completed (one basement floor and six overground floors). Building occupied in May (present library reading room and former archive)
November 1970 Library reorganized: Books and materials/magazines sections (two sections) --> Began to classify and organize Japanese/Western materials
February 1972 Microfilm/fiche reader/printer purchased
1982 New archive (9th floor) expanded
From 1992 Data entry into NACSIS-CAT began, collection became searchable with OPAC
From March 2002 Lending of electronic books commenced
From June 2008 Closed for anti-earthquake reinforcement work (main building and new building)
July 2008 Library office moved to prefabricated building Materials in archive subject to reinforcement work packed up and moved out
June 2009 Completion of anti-earthquake reinforcement work (main building and new building)
From October 2009 Library reopened
From November 2011 Began publishing digital images of collection materials
From April 2012 Started to offer PDF viewing service (edds)
August 2014 - May 2015 Use of some archive materials suspended for anti-earthquake reinforcement work (main building and old building north side)
February 2016 - March 2017 Use of some archive materials suspended for anti-earthquake reinforcement work (main building and old building south side)
March 2017 Management of labor survey materials handed over to Center for Social Research and Data Archives
May 2018 - September 2018 Use of some former archive materials suspended for renovation of elevator in archive
March 2020 - December 2021 As measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, some services had suspensioned
